I just received my S3 last week and first noticed this issue last night. As one poster stated, the video just doesn't come up on a channel change sometimes until you bring up the guide or info or something. Also, I noticed a significant slowdown in channel changing last night. Perhaps it's a coincidence but I connected via HDMI/DVI last night for the first time. However, I found that the component connection looked better on my TV so I switched back to using that and just left the HDMI cable connected. The problem was still happening though.

    Any updates?

    Thanks!

Has anyone figured out / gotten any relief on this issue. Wondering if it's worth it to continue calling Tech Support about this. If it's a software issue, also wondering if it's on anyones todo list at TIVO...

I'd like to tag along too - just bought my S3 today, 1080i fixed, component video, and I was getting some blackouts while watching a recorded program (during the actual show, not when it was switching to commercials).

Not exactly what the OP mentioned, but I can't help but feel these issues are related.....

When I had the problem of not receiving a channel I worked with a very patient person from TW. Now this mostly is different from what you describe but just after they made the right adjustment I still had a blank screen. Going to the diagnostic screen I saw that I was not receiving the channel, which even though I couldn't see it it acknowledge a channel there before. When I went back to the channel again, poof, like magic it appeared.

I believe that TiVo has made the S3 so sensitive to receiving data that anything that is slightly off from head end may cause a problem. Next time this happens just out of curiosity go to your diagnostic screen (tivo central>messages & settings>account and system info>diagnostics. See first if it even acknowledges a channel being received and then check the PID's and see if PCR and Video match at that moment.

If you see a difficulty, I would contact TiVo and make them aware of a problem.

One thing I noticed with the blank screen is if you have the S3 set to show the time on the screen (Select Play Select 9 Select), the clock continues to update on the blank screen, leading me to believe this is an issue with TiVo locking up on the channel properly - not the TV syncing with the TiVo.

happens to me 95% of the time. only if I use the guide to select a channel. if I type in a channel number or there is a scheduled recording, it works ok.

my gut feeling is it has something to do with the S3 changing resolution from the guide to the selected channel.

Initially I wasn't too bothered by this issue. Until I had 15 people over for the Superbowl (boo Colts....:^)) and had the blackout issues on most of the pre-game commercials. They were unwatchable. (Amazing how a room full of people changes your perception of what's tolerable).

So, I unhooked my $800 S3 and reattached my HD OTA tuner. Worked fine, but the entire game I had to think to myself, "Why did I buy that? I wonder if I adopted a little -too- early this time.....".

I double-checked my settings, 1080i fixed (on a Sony KF-60WE610). I had also tried native, same issue. The pregame programming itself was fine, but commercials were a mess. This S3 might end up back on the shelves of Best Buy. I was fine with my two DT-S2's.

This sounds like a problem that's different than the one this thread is about, unless you were constantly changing channels.

This problem only occurs upon channel changes (via the Guide, entering numbers, channel up/down) and happens randomly (seems somewhat rare for me now). The TiVo changes the channel and starts recording, but "forgets" to start the playback of the recorded stream.

This can be remedied by pressing the Play button, bringing up the Guide, or hitting the Info button to display the program's information. I think playback will also kick-in if you were to leave it for 30 minutes so the buffer is filled (I've never waited that long :)).

This doesn't affect recordings and the actual program content is not lost. If you were to get the blank screen and let it sit for a few minutes, then hit Play, you'd see that the Progress Bar has the proper amount of green displayed for what it has recorded since the channel change, and you can hit the Skip-to-End button to jump to the actual live part.

I've had this too. (Im in fixed 1080i HDMI).

I'll go to another channel (might have to switch channels a couple times) and it comes back and then i go back to the original channel this happened and all is fine.

I'll have to try the other things (hit play, bring guide up, etc).

It happens a few times a week.

Thanks Krellion, I agree (I did kinda say it was a different issue).

Regardless, I spent most of today fiddling with it. Nothing I did stopped the blackouts on commercials or live TV. I also experienced some random rebooting. It was at that point I decided my $650 was better spent somewhere else.

Best Buy, you're getting a slightly used Series 3 back this week. I'll miss my HD recording, but I'll gladly welcome the stability of the S2.

Best of luck to the rest of you.

    No real answer(s) here..?

A friend picked up an S3 this week and I went over to help him set it up and he's having similar issues.

All SD channels have fine picture and audio.

50% of his HD channels have fine picture and audio.

50% of his HD channels simply have a blank screen which, after over an hour of tweaking, we couldn't get to display a picture (trying working through all the various output settings, fixed, hybrid, native, etc).

Ultimately, he gave up and plugged his 6412 (Comcast customer) back in and enjoyed all his channels.

We'll call Tivo/Comcast today, but it seems other folks have had this issue and there's no fix..?

    Cheers.

This sounds more like a CableCARD issue than the one this thread is covering, definitely contact your cable company. See my most recent post (#28) in this thread for a good description of the problem this thread covers.

My S3 just got the 8.1.1 update a few days ago, but I haven't been able to use it much to see if the blank screen problem has been fixed. Anyone else still experiencing this problem, or can we lay this thread to rest? :)

Are you kidding? 8.1.1 brought on the FIRST case I've ever had of a blank screen. No, it's not a dead issue!!! :)
