My second TIVO 2 uses a Comcast DTA50 set top box. It passes all the test for setting up and changing channels. Tivo test with CH 2 - 22 or so. When I programmed to record CH 198
(MHz) it recorded Ch 19 instead.
QUESTION: is there a problem with 3 digit channels? Why would the system be unreliable in this case when it changed properly on all tests?

How is your S2 controlling the cable box? IR or serial? If IR, it sounds like maybe that third digit of the channel change was missed. I believe there are settings you can tweak for the IR blasters to make sure the signals are sent slowly enough so the cable box doesn't "miss" any.

The DTA50 uses code 10014, not 10104 like most DTAs.

Play around with the 3 versions (A, B & C) and the number of digits / enter options. A is the fastest option. B & C are slower but usually more reliable.

According to HomeUser the best settings for that box are:

    IR CODE 10014-B
    Chanel Digits 2
    Enter button no
