why would either be in poor taste ? I don't get it. It's not like they were deadly rivals or something.

Would you send a sympathy card to Dick Clark's family in a Soul Train envelope?

Did Dick Clark own some/all of AI??? I can't see how it was in bad taste.

I'm sure the tribute was planned, the death wasn't.

Isn't AI a Dick Clark production or am I thinking of SYTYCD?

They didn't have to go through with the tribute.

I agree with you, photoshopgrl, plus they had brought in Don Cornelius' son for the show.

"We loved your dad, and thanks for coming, but since Dick Clark died (JUST TODAY!), we won't be doing what we had planned to re: Soul Train". Now that would NOT have been classy!

Absolutely NOT in bad taste. DC himself would have approved - and it would have been a major undertaking to remove it from the show anyway!

SYTYCD is partially produced by dcp. AI isn't.

I honestly see no reason why you would think it was in poor taste.

Don Cornelius died recently and they wanted to honor him - which is in good taste.

I am sure they will do something for Dick Clark in the future.

And I thought Ryan's speech at the beginning of the episode was very genuine and quite nice - and tasteful.

I had no problem with any of it, except Colton's butchering of September - that was a train wreck!!!

I didn't think it was in poor taste either - the soul train aspect was probably planned months ago.

    Dick Clark passed away what?
3 hours before they went live?

I think it was bizarrely uncanny timing however :)

Okay I'm not going to have time to run through them all before results so I'll just say this briefly.

HATED Colton's first song. Hated his outfit during it even more. I was getting Durbin flashbacks, and not in a good way. Dude your legs are far too skinny to be in those red pants. Yikes. His second wasn't great but not as bad. Overall, his worst week. :(
Phillip on the other hand ROCKED it on that first song. He was good on the second but not as good.
Holly opened the show with a bang. I rolled my eyes at yet another Adele song but she brought something a bit different to it and I could see her loosen up during it. I thought it was by far her best yet. Second was just okay.
Jessica I am over. Her shouty horrifying rendition of that Otis song made me want to turn my TV off. She was pretty good on the first one.
Skylar was good if you like Skylar. That's about all I can say.
Joshua, the minute he was with Jimmy talking about singing Fantasia I hit the FFW button. I didn't even bother with his second one either. I love that song far too much to even entertain the notion of him screwing it up for me.
Elise is wearing on me too. I think she's outta there tonight.
(okay so that was more than I planned to type but gotta go!)

Colton -- totally agree, other than I kind of liked the "girl band in white" setup if not his singing

Phillip -- agree -- I always thought he was talented but did the same thing on every song UNTIL the first one this week...my favorite of his by far!

Holly -- agree, I've liked her personality when she isnt singing more than say Jessica, but she just needs some experience

    Skylar -- agree

Joshua -- agree +100000, i cant even listen to him.

Elise -- Here's where I disagree, I think Elise is excellent, but just doesn't know how to choose a proper song. I'd totally buy a record from her or see a concert (age warning) before Jessica or Holly or Skylar

My rankings: Who will be at the top:
    Phillip Phillip or Skylar
    Elise Skylar or Phillip
    Holly Jessica
    Jessica Joshua
    Colton Elise
    Skylar Holly
Joshua Colton* after the fact ranking
