Like many, I haven't felt this series was really living up to its potential but IMHO this was the best episode since the pilot... in fact, I probably liked it even more than the pilot.

Lots of action, an interesting plot, sufficient character development and a not too clumsy tie-in with the movies. It was all well balanced and nicely done, so more like this please.

So May and Ward totally did it, right? I mean he didn't follow her in to her room for just a drink. It will probably make for some drama if/when Skye and/or Coulson find out...
I think that was the hint, but it could be something else.

May said that she always had the rage inside her, and Ward asked how did she handle it. I don't think she replied. We did see her doing yoga on previous episode.

So an alternative explanation is that she was teaching him yoga and other relaxations technique... late at night... in a hotel room.... with a bottle of wine..

"For a little while"
:D Yeah, definite callback.

Also "It's a magical place" seems like another conditioned response from Coleson. I don't think anyone (himself included) has mentioned Tahiti without him following up with that phrase.
It almost seems like a secret agent code phrase transaction, searching for the person who will respond to the "magical place" phrase "correctly". I don't think Coulson knows anything about it, but maybe he will remember when the right answering phrase is given.

I thought he asked her what she saw (knowing that he always sees the well), and she replied something along the lines of "the same thing I see all the time".

He's definitely starting to suspect. There was a moment two episodes ago, in SHIELD HQ, where someone mentions Tahiti and he automatically starts responding with "It's a magical place" but falters halfway through, and looks a bit confused and concerned. And of course waking up in a cold sweat after dreaming about Tahiti this episode. (I too loved the Dollhouse callback. I may have cheered.)

It looked like the start of the standard tai chi form (but qigong can look the same). However, she seemed to be just repeating the same 3-4 opening movements.
Yeah, tai chi and qi (chi) gong are just branches of the same discipline, really. I leaned towards qi gong because the idea seemed to be that she was using it for meditation purposes more than for physical fitness. But on the other hand, at the speed she was doing it, tai chi is probably more apt. Most likely the answer is the crew didn't really worry about the distinction.

and don't forget when he had himself checked out medically.

They probably low keyed each other to sleep. And that's my main problem with the show. Coulson, May and Ward are all low key, laid back, laconic characters. Coulson worked well with the Avengers because his personality was opposite to the testosterone fueled egos of the super heroes and Nick Fury. On this show, other than the two chattering chipmunks, everybody is laid back.
Yes, I agree that Coulson's character worked much better in the movies against the super-human heroes. Like in the first Thor movie when Thor regains his powers and Coulson meekly tells "Donald" that he hasn't been completely honest. That scene really works well. But without the super heroes to work off the character falls kind of flat.

As far as the chattering chipmunks I cringe every time they appear. It actually reminds me of Terra Nova which could have been a pretty good show but one of its big problems was all the kids and kids themes in the show. My jump-the-shark moment was when the hero and his young daughter were trapped somewhere and the kid had to sing a song to make her brave enough to do something to get them out. To me the chipmunks seem like the "kids" in the show and, again to me, greatly detract from it. Sure they need some techno-nerds to take care of the super high-tech stuff but I really hate their characters!!!

I think that saying that this weeks episode had a tie in to the Thor movie, then that tie in just being a 2 minute scene of people looking at mangled metal was a little weak.

Overall I thought it was one of the best episodes yet.
One of my (many) problems with this show, is it seems that so many of these episodes give me the feeling that they are shilling one of the Marvel movies. This week it was Thor (is that coming out on DVD/BD soon?)

This show now is in the "do something else while watching so I don't fall asleep" zone for me now. I watch it because my son always wants to talk about it with me. But I'm close to deleting the SP. I guess I'm just not enough of a comic book geek to enjoy it. It reminds me of Human Target meets Warehouse 13, and I found both of those show a lot more entertaining (at least the first season of HT was).

I'm watching the show and enjoying it but I don't think I've seen any of the movies that it's associated with. I'm thinking I probably should watch Avengers sometime. Sounds like the Thor movies are related as well but I really don't have any desire to watch them at this time.

I think the show is giving enough explanation that I can follow just fine without having watched any of the movies. Is Coulson the only character from movies?

In the pilot, Colbie Smulders reprises her role from the movies as SHIELD Agent Maria Hill (she was second in command to Samuel L. Jackson's Colonel Nick Fury, who also appeared in one of the TV show episodes). These were just guest appearances though.

Other than that, all the characters on the TV show are new.

You don't need to watch any of the movies. If you did, Avengers is the only important one. The rest are really not necessary.

Plus Avengers is just a really fun movie, so why not!

This past one was a Thor centric episode. Coincidence that the movie is out and the DVD is right around the bend?

The movie opened two weeks ago. I don't think the disc is exactly "right around the bend". Regardless, obviously the cross-promotion is not a coincidence.
Yeah, I messed up. I thought the movie had been out awhile, but it has just come out in theaters. So this episode especially a cross promotion. And the fact that it's very close to the Thanksgiving weekend when a lot of people go to the movies....makes it all the more obvious. They are always dropping names from other Avenger characters. One thing Disney is, is the master of cross promotion. They've done that over ALL of their networks over the years. Wait until we get closer to the new Star Wars movies. It's going to get nuts on ABC and their other networks.
