Roamio launches, what about stream?

First it will have stream built in, so no longer will an extra box be required.

Second, that internal stream function will allegedly allow you to download shows remotely with a software update later this year.

So, that begs some important questions:

1. If you buy a roamio, will you still need a stram for other tivos on your network. My guess is that you will still need a stream for non-roamio devices

2. Will the download outside of your network functionality work with stream with that software update? My guess is no, but there is a possibility....

Oh, and still no mention of android support. That is becoming an embarrassment at this point.

If you have a unit with built-in stream (with 6 tuners), it seems unlikely that you will need to care much about streaming from an older 2 or 4 tuner box. If someone with a premiere and a roamio were to max out their tuners for any given show, I would look to just manage the season passes differently rather than purchase another stream, or move the content (if possible).

I'm hoping to see a few streams become available on craigslist!

You would care if you have multiple Tivos. I would hate to have all of my recordings having to be shifted from the family room to the bedroom. I want shows in each place so I can watch without having to move things around.

I agree with Austin, I think it is a viable question.

I have a 2 tuner Premier with a Tivo stream, I will probably purchase a Roamio Pro soon but plan on keeping the Premier. Will the stream cabability in the Roamio support the Premier or will I need to keep the separate stream box to maintain that functionality on the Premier specifically?

This may be TBD...

according to a tweet from Margret earlier:
"As long as the Roamio and the Premiere are on the same wired or MoCA network, then you can stream from the Premiere to iPad."
Yep, I saw her tweet as well.

If you have a Roamio Pro or plus and a Premier on the same network, the Stream built into the Roamio box will drive the Premier as well.

I assumed so, but better to be safe then sorry. I will be putting the TiVo HD on Craigslist soon.

I doubt it, the TiVo stream is a product that will continue to be available separately not just for the Premiere line, but for the base Roamio DVR. Additionally it uses the EXACT same chip as the new streaming Roamio's have.

It wouldn't make sense from a business or a technological perspective to fragment the feature set.

Yeah back when we thought they were using the transcoding capabilities of the Broadcom chip it seemed like we might see some segmentation between the standalone Stream and the built in functionality. But now that we know it uses the same chip there is no reason for there to be any difference between the standalone Stream and the built in streaming of the Plus/Pro

What I want to know is will the Stream receive the update the Roamio Plus and Pro will get in the fall to activate the Slingbox like feature allowing the watching of live and recorded content remotely over the internet, and furthermore, will it work with Premieres.

I have a PXL back at my parent's house in Philly currently hooked to a Slingbox that I use to watch my sports channels and teams from there. If I was to replace the Slingbox with a stream, do you think I'd be able to see that PXL on, and stream the programs to, a new Roamio plus/pro here at my home in Hawaii, or just see and stream to my iDevice? (Once that feature's activated of course!)
