D replaces HR10 with HR20 and tells me to pitch the HR10

I am a long time lurker and like everyone else, my HR10 started rebooting last week. Before I checked the forums I called D and asked them to replace the receiver. (I have the warranty plan.) The said no problem and sent me a HR20.

Then I checked the forums and found out I needed to force an upgrade to 6.3e. I forced the upgrade and my HR10 started acting normally. I received the HR20 the next day and called DirecTV. (No return label in the HR20 box.)

I told D that I wanted to keep my HR10 and send back the HR20. D stated that they didn't want my HR10 back and that I could keep the HR20. I could do anything I wanted with the HR10. (eg. throw it away.) I asked if I could keep it hooked up and they said yes. (He stressed that I could NOT call in for a repair on it in the future. Not that it needed to be said.)

I thought this was an intresting tid bit.

My HR10 is sitting on top of my HR21.
(actually, there are some coke caps between them, for ventilation)

HR21 was sitting on top of my HR10, but I took the HR10 out of the stack to replace the power supply and fans, and didn't want to have to lift up the HR21 to put the HR10 back under it.

6.3e, power supply and new fans, the 2 year old HR10 is recording as well as the week old HR21.

Nice... they completely ignored you. You weren't asking to send the HR10 back. What they didn't tell you is you now have a 2 yr commitment and if you owned your HR10, you don't anymore; it was replaced by a leased HR20. (And you'll now have to pay extra for the "HD Xtra" channels.)

Did they send someone to replace your dish too? If you don't have a 5lnb dish, the HR20 is mostly useless -- it won't get any of the new HD channels.

I'm surprised you would accept an HR21 which will not record OTA HD since we easily get so many HD stations OTA in Salt Lake City. Could you not request an HR20?

If more than three days had passed there was nothing to listen to. After three days the commitment is there. If there was a reason to get out of the contract it has to be addressed withing 72 hours of activation. And if you replace a HR10 under Protection Plan it DOES NOT renew or put in place a commitment. If it did you need to get that corrected. Finally he still owns his HR10. So to recap, he got a free receiver, was able to keep his old receiver and he should not have gotten his commitment renewed or extended. Yeah that sounds like a terrible deal.

If he got the HR21 through his protection plan (which he said he did) there is no committment added. PLUS, he owns the HR21 because according to D* "owned is replaced by owned." If they hit him with 2 years and/or if it lists as "leased" he should put up a stink and have them refer to the "protection plan rules" in Doris where it clearly states "owned replaced with owned."

Thats what I thought. I know when my was replaced with a HR-10 she went out of her way to tell me that my commitment was not extended and the receiver was now owned instead of leased. Thanks for confirming.

I called D about an hour ago. They switched my HR20 from leased to owned and I do NOT have a contract renewal. I noticed that they also activated UltimateTV on my account. (I haven't had a UTV in years.) They removed the UTV charge, cleared up the owned vs. leased and credited my account $10 for 12 months for my trouble.

Can't complain at all.

I tried, but all the install company had were HR21's.

I have my HR10 still running, along with my S3, so OTA is covered for now.

I supposed I could run over to Best Buy or Circuit City and get an HR20 if I really wanted to record more OTA.
(I've heard rumors that they still have some HR20's in stock)

I did some test recordings of CBS and NBC shows via MPEG4, and I can't tell a difference from OTA on my little 30" HDTV.

All I really wanted was SCI-HD, USA-HD and FX-HD (BBCA-HD would be nice as well), and be able to record them since I work primetime and can't watch live TV much, HR21 fits this need just fine.
Now that I have HDNET back, I find myself recording from that again as well.

That's exactly as I suspected. And you (we) have every right to complain. No one should have to call them to get them to do their d***ed job correctly the FIRST TIME.

Many tivo owners may be miffed to find out DTV has their dvrs listed as leased when they've had them for many years. The f'ing liars claimed my parent's HDVR2 -- purchased 12/2002, activated 12/26/2002 -- was leased. I'm betting they have the 11 year old Sony receiver listed as leased too -- it was (re)activated on 12/28/2002 after receiving the new card for it (can't activate an H card, 'tho the drone tried several times until her supervisor laughed at her loud enough I could hear it.)

I'm not sure it is so much a conspiracy. You have to keep in mind that almost every new dvr added today is a leased dvr. Unless you point out to them at sign up time that your new one is NOT leased they will take the default path.

do tell, and what might his agenda be? from what ive been reading on this forum theres a whole lotta people that might have agendas here, many of them very specific, so why would you care?

man, for a forum about television there is so much cryptic bs floating around here, lol.
OK, Cramer pops up in many threads and never has a single good thing to say about DirecTV, that would be his agenda, simple really. It doesn't matter what great service or great deal someone has received, the response is always negative.

There are people here a lot more balanced. Generally satisfied with TIVO, HR20 and DirecTV, I am much more interested in hearing opinions from those people.

I can't disagree that there are lots of different agenda's here but that doesn't make this one any less obvious. The problem of course is that many people, on both sides, react to balance out the input of others and make themselves look more extreme than they really are.

well perhaps he had a negative experience with dtv, so therefore his posts might have a negative slant. i dont think thats an 'agenda,' i believe its simply resultant of an individuals own experience, which certainly makes sense.

ive just reread his posts, and really cannot see anything that would indicate an agenda. only his right to express his opinion based on someone who writes they are possibly getting screwed over by dtv, and he comsserates (sp).

based on you and your defending dtv and the hr20 on many of your posts, it strongly suggests that you too have an agenda, and that you are a shill for dtv along with several others who post here.

now that doesnt make you feel very good, does it? probably makes you a little angry.

well, thats pretty much what you just did/said to cramer, while he was simply posting his opinion. it probably wont make him all that happy when he eventualy reads it either.

for the record, i dont think you are a shill for dtv, i just pretty much did to you what you did to him based on what ive read and wanted to let you know what it felt like.

we're all (apparently) very passionate about these devices and have some pretty strong opinions, and unless cramer works for cable or dish i dont think its fair to label him as an 'agendean (just made that up, lol).'

opinionated, yes (we all are). wish we could all debate this stuff over some beers at the local bar, lol.

Actually it doesn't bother me at all (as it may not bother Cramer of course :)).

I am more than happy with DTV, TIVO and HR20, my posts tend to attempt to be a balance against people who discourage others from going with the HR20. I am saying "all work well", not exactly an agenda . I have had problems in the past with TIVO and once or twice with DirecTV but I do think I'm able to see the bigger picture = price I'm OK with, all the channels I want, HD, recordable HD etc. etc. I think there are plenty of people like that here but we accidentally get pushed into one side of the argument or the other.

The more I use the HR20 the more annoyed I get everytime I press GUIDE on the TIVO and the show I'm watching goes off :D

now see, youve just gone and found something i absolutely hate about the hr20. i despise the 'pig,' and wish there was a way to disable it.

all of it is so subjective, neither unit is better than the other.

i dislike dtv more than either the hr10 or hr20. i dont like being tied to a machine for 2 years while i pay them so that i can workout the bugs for them. thats a bunch of baloney.

i dont like the inconsistencies with their csrs and having to make multiple calls to get the same deal my neighbor got.

i dont like how theyve become more like my cable co, while my cable co has become more like dtv used to be.

that said, i dont plan on leaving anytime soon so ill just suck it up, lol.

Rickmeoff, so we can now agree to peacefully disagree because you have offered clearly opinion based reasons to dislike the system that a passer by can read. What I don't like is the "HR20 is a pile of crap" posts you often see in response to genuine requests. I could even argue that the HR10 is better but it's irrelevant if I want the MPEG4 channels.

I'm guessing RS4's post got deleted (it showed up in my email) but I am proud to be "part of the HR20 army and a shill for DirecTV" if that label is made by RS4 :)

So... I called D again to verify that everything was correct. Low and behold I find out that my contract WAS renewed. The CSR transfered me to another department that escalated to a supervisor. They claim that the problem will be fixed tommorow.

They also credited my account for 6 months of the HD package. I will have to call again tomorrow to make sure they fixed it.

This is all very fustrating.

I kept mine... it is on and popping to record OTA HD goodness.

For the record I have serious issues with the HR20.. I am on #4 and still inconsistent perfomance (new channels not coming in message 771 sometimes)
If you are getting 771 messages on a 4th unit... I would certainly consider having the other parts of your installation checked out.... Your dish, multiswitch, B-Band adapters...

thanks Earl
I happen to have four b-band connectors... I troubleshot unit #2 by switching them around and the same tuner had the issue isolated to tuner#1. The strange part is I can force it to use one tuner (by recording something on the other) but I still get inconstitent results.... i.e. sometimes it works and other times no. I will try it again with #4. I gotta tell you though I get very nervous with these installers. You should have seen what the original DTV installer did. I am working on filing a damage claim (although the damage amounted to less than I imagined).

Should mention #3 was replaced cause it totally failed (no picture or sound - but guide worked)

Got it Back? Where did it go?
I cancelled the "HD Package" after my free 3 months were up back when I first got the HR10.

I didn't watch enough to make it worth the then $4.99 a month. (or was it $5.99?)
TNT-HD was the only channel I regularly recorded from, The Closer and Saved at the time, and that channel stuck after I cancelled.

Now you have to get the "HD Package" when activating an HD receiver or DVR.

Torchwood in HD, without the BBCA editing, makes it almost worth it again.
